Overwhelmed and Stressed: How to Manage and Overcome It

4 min read

[ad_1]

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest or motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.

Many teachers and administrators are experiencing burnout.

My name is Kristi Thompson after 24 years of experience, my passion is in helping professionals and organizations navigate the ever-changing landscape and continue to advance strategically. As CEO and Founder of SACE- Strategic Advancement Corporate and Education Consulting, I have seen leaders deal with stress in a variety of different ways, some healthy and others not so healthy. I come from an educational background with 23 years of experience as a classroom teacher, building principal, curriculum director, human resources director, and school superintendent…and then transitioned to the corporate world as a development executive.

Webinar June 6th

Join me on June 6th for a free webinar on how to manage and overcome feeling overwhelmed and stressed:

Burnout is real

If you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed right now, you are not alone.

📌What keeps you up at night?

📌How is stress impacting your body and mind?

📌What are the consequences of our stressors?

Stress comes in many forms, it can build gradually over time, overwhelm you if you let it, or occur in a moment and then be gone. As an expert who works with professionals and leaders at a high level of performance I want to offer you an opportunity to uncover what consequences are behind your main stressors and practical strategies to feel in balance, stress-free and motivated.

Evaluate What is Your Source of Stress

It is different for every person to identify what is causing them stress. Put one thing in place that you can do when you identify that you’re feeling stressed. Educators, we know that parents and an unreasonable workload can be a major source of stress! However, these are not the only stressors in education.

  • Meditate
  • Solve Puzzles
  • Play a Game
  • Gratitude Journal
  • 5-10 minutes by yourself
  • Breathing

Stress in Education

Educators have an overload of responsibility. Not only are we trying to teach to standards but we need to care for the safety of kids. The pressures of accountability and responsibility can seem overwhelming. In caring for others we can overlook taking care of ourselves.

  • Are we having too many meetings?
  • Are the meetings taking educators away from doing what they need to do with students?
  • What can we take off the plate?
  • What do we need to keep doing?
  • What do we need to stop doing?

Setting Boundaries

It may seem like there are no boundaries on your time or responsibilities. Education will take everything out of you if you let it. This will lead to burnout. As Brene Brown says “Being clear is kind.” We worry about being offensive to other people so we don’t say anything about how we are really feeling. This creates a pseudo culture instead of a collaborative culture.

  • Decide what hours you are working. Stick to them.
  • Prioritize yourself. This is not selfish.
  • Be clear about your intent and what you need.
  • Set time on your calendar that you are NOT available.
  • Be your own advocate

IT IS OKAY TO SET BOUNDARIES.
